The Better Dream for My Life

In Jeremiah 29:11 I read, “For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'” (NIV)

Before I was born, God thought up his dream for my life. But so often in life I focus on my own dreams instead of what God has planned for me. I think I know better than God what will make me happy and fulfilled.

Ephesians 2:10 says, “God has made us what we are. He has created us in Christ Jesus to live lives filled with good works that he has prepared for us to do” (GW).

I need God’s dream for my life more than my own dream for it. Why? Because God knows me much better than I know myself. And he knows how his dream for my life fits into the bigger plan he has for the world. I cannot know everything, and I can't have the right perspective all the timebut God does.

God’s dream for my life consists of the goals and plans that he created for me to fulfill—and his dream is far more important than my own dreams.

God hasn’t promised to bless everything that I think up. Left to my own devices, I probably wouldn’t choose a lifefilled with good works” as my dream. It would probably be closer to my childhood dream. Thankfully, this is not God’s dream for me, and he has something much better in store.

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV).

I might have had some dreams that weren’t the right choice or that I messed up. Maybe I thought I was going to marry a certain person. But now, looking back, I realize that would have been a disaster. Maybe I had to let go of a dream, and I thought it was going to be the end of me. But now, looking back, I see that it was really just the beginning of God’s better dream for me.

When I have to choose between my dream and the dream I know God has given me, always choose God’s plan. God’s dream for my life is always good. It will never harm me. It’s going to give me great hope and a wonderful future!

God knows my future, and his plans for me are good and full of hope. As long as God, who knows the future, provides my agenda and goes with me as I fulfill his mission, I can have boundless hope. This doesn't mean that I will be spared pain, suffering, or hardship, but that God will see me through to a glorious conclusion.
