Talking to God About My Interests

In Psalm 103:13 I read, He is like a father to us, tender and sympathetic to those who revere him." (TLB)

God loves for me to talk to him about anything. Whatever I’m interested in, God is interested in it as well. He wants me to talk to him about my interests for three reasons.

First, because God loves me. I exist because God wants to love me. It’s the reason I’m alive! When I love someone, I’m interested in what they’re interested in. God feels the same way about me, but a thousand times more.

Secondly, God gave me those interests. All those hobbies and sports and all the things I like to do and desire come from my Creator. He wired me with them, which means he actually knows what I’m interested in more than I do. He loves me, and he delights to see me enjoy the things he made me to love.

Lastly, God enjoys talking with me. He is my Father. Parents are interested in what their kids are interested in. Am I ever bored while I’m praying? If so, that’s because I’m talking about stuff that I think I should talk about, and not what I’m actually interested in. God is a good Father, and he’s interested in what I’m interested in.

The Bible says it like this: “He is like a father to us, tender and sympathetic to those who revere him” (Psalm 103:13 TLB).

As a parent, I didn’t wait until my daughter could talk in order to start loving her. Same with my grandsons. Whether I ever talk to God in prayer or not, he loves me deeply, just like a parent loves a child before they can’t communicate.

As a child begins to grow, parents desire to have a conversation with them. I want to know what they’re thinking and feeling and share their burdens and joys. I want to delight in their interests and hear their perspective.

That’s the kind of relationship God wants to have with me. He loves me, whether or not I communicate with him. But he longs for the day that I grow up and talk to him about the stuff that’s important to me.

In summary, God is like a father to me, tender and sympathetic. God loves for me to talk to him about anything. Whatever I’m interested in, God is interested in. God is like a father, tender and compassionate. I receive his love in my heart by means of his Holy Spirit. God can and will tenderly heal my deep losses, if I take him seriously and follow him.

Father, thank you for Your Word and Jesus as my savior and example. You want me and I need you in my life. Please give me Your strength for today and remind me in little ways that I can always believe in, have faith in and can trust you in everything. This includes being the authority for my life, the source of my self-worth and my hope for the future. You have my best interests in mind. So I ask you to help me to embrace the way you’ve made me; my gifting and passions. Help me to serve and fulfill the mission you have in mind for me.

Today, I ask you for wisdom and guidance for my day, my work, my leadership, my interactions with others, doing well and making a difference in others lives (including my job.) I pray all these things through you Son Jesus’ name, Amen.
