God’s Promises for the Humble

In Psalm 25:9 I read, “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way." (NIV)

Humility is not thinking less of myself. I can be confident and humble at the same time! Humility is thinking of myself less. When I stay focused on God and helping others, I naturally think about myself less.

It’s not an easy way to live. Why would anybody choose to think of others more than they think of themselves? Because God makes many promises in His Word for Christians who will humble themselves. Humility is a big deal to God.

Here are four things God will do in my life when I work on being humble.

If I’m humble, God will guide me. If I don’t know which way to turn, whether to get in or get out, hold on or let go, then get humble. When I humble myself, God will make my next step clear. I’ll make fewer mistakes in life! “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way” (Psalm 25:9 NIV).

If I’m humble, God will bless me. These promises are all through Scripture, like Isaiah 66:2: “I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts” (NLT). God doesn’t bless egotistic or prideful people or those who secretly think they’re better than everybody else. He blesses the humble.

If I’m humble, God will give me the power to change. The power to change is called grace. Maybe there are things in my life I’d like to change. Perhaps I’ve tried to change, but I can’t or I won’t. I need grace! How do I get God’s grace and the power to change? “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6 NLT). Every time I’m prideful, I’m on the opposite side of God, and I don’t want to be there. The humbler I am, the more grace God gives me.

If I’m humble, God will reduce my stress.

If I’m prideful, my stress is going to go up. Instead, listen to Jesus: “Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:29 NLT). When I’m tapped out and feel like I have nothing left to give, surrender to Jesus. Spend time in the Word, learning how to choose gentleness and humility by his example. Pray, and ask him for the grace to change.

Then I’ll find the rest my soul has been craving.

In summary, God will guide the humble in what is right and teach them his way. Humility is not thinking less of myself. Humility is thinking of myself less. When I stay focused on God and helping others, I naturally think about myself less. God makes many promises in His Word for Christians who will humble themselves. Humility is a big deal to God. There are four things God will do in my life when I work on being humble. First, God will guide me. As I trust in God, he grants defense, guidance, and pardon for me. I should express my desire for guidance by wanting to be guided and realizing that God's primary guidance system is in his Word. By reading and constantly learning from it, I will gain the wisdom to perceive God's direction for my life. I may be tempted to demand answers from God, but instead I should seek direction. When I'm willing to seek God, learn from his Word, and obey his commands, then I will receive his specific guidance.

Father, thank you for Your Word and Jesus as my savior and example. You want me and I need you in my life. Please give me Your strength for today and remind me in little ways that I can always believe in, have faith in and can trust you in everything. This includes being the authority for my life, the source of my self-worth and my hope for the future. You have my best interests in mind. So I ask you to help me to embrace the way you’ve made me; my gifting and passions. Help me to serve and fulfill the mission you have in mind for me.

Father, with the help of your Holy Spirit in me, I ask for your help for me to be humble so that you can guide, bless, give me the power to change and to reduce any stress in my life

Today, I ask you for wisdom and guidance for my day, my work, my leadership, my interactions with others, doing well and making a difference in others lives (including my job.) I pray all these things through your Son Jesus’ name, Amen.
