God Wants to Give Me an Overflowing Life

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 (NIV)

The moment I start doubting the goodness of God and deciding for myself what will make me happy, all kinds of problems begin. I wind up overworked, overanxious, and overloaded—and just generally overwhelmed!

But God promises me an overflowing life, not an overwhelmed life.

Jesus said, “I have come in order that you might have life—life in all its fullness” (John 10:10 GNT).

So, how do I experience an abundant, overflowing life? There is one habit that, if I can learn to do it every day, will fill me with an endless supply of God's goodness and it's to: Stay connected to Jesus.

In John 15:5, Jesus compared staying connected to him with a grapevine: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5 NIV).

Just like when a cluster of grapes is cut off from the vine, It dies. The same is true with me.

God is my true source of energy and power. If I try to go through life on my own, I'm going to be overwhelmed. But if I'm connected to him, I'll have all the power I need. Or, as the Bible says, “Your joy will overflow!” (John 15:11 NLT).

One way for me to stay connected to Jesus is through a daily quiet time. In a quiet time, I set aside time to be alone with God and get to know him through reading his Word and talking to him in prayer.

Mark 1:35 says, “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed” (NIV).

Even Jesus knew his personal need for connection with God—and he was the Son of God! How much more do I need the strength that comes from daily time with the Lord?

Honestly there will be some days I may not feel like or I run out of time in having a quiet time—but  I'm learning that I need to do it anyway. If I wait to have a quiet time until I feel like it or make time for it, the Enemy will make sure I never feel like it or get around to it.

When I find myself needing more time, energy, knowledge, or opportunity? The challenge will be for me to continually develop the habit of spending daily time with Jesus. If I stay connected to him, I'll find my life overflowing with God’s goodness and power—and this is all I really need.

  • What overwhelming situation in my life would I like to have replaced with God’s abundant goodness? For me my work calendar and the feeling of needing to be task oriented when in fact God has helped me create margin so that I can lead, invest, and mentor in leadership and personal growth skills.

  • What distracts me from spending time with God?  For me it's almost never planning enough time in my early morning activities, so it can get crowded out the urgent vs. the important things.

  • What boundaries can you put into place this week to help you stay focused on God during your quiet time with him? For me it's honoring my wake time to provide me with the margin in the morning for time with him, along with exercise.

In Summary:

This passage and reflection center on Jesus’ teaching in John 15:5 regarding my need for continuous connection to Him as the true vine. When I attempt to operate independently, I inevitably face burnout, anxiety, and overwhelm, mistaking temporary productivity for true fruitfulness. By establishing intentional, non-negotiable daily quiet time—as modeled by Jesus Himself in Mark 1—we move from an overwhelmed state into an overflowing life powered by God’s strength. True fruitfulness, especially in leadership and mentoring, is not born out of task-driven busyness, but out of abiding in Christ and protecting the margin required to prioritize what is truly important over what feels urgent.

Bottom Line:

Sustained power and purposeful leadership flow not from managing an overbooked schedule, but from abiding daily in Christ to allow His life to overflow through mine.

Next Steps:

To align my daily routines with my core identity as a spiritual leader and mentor, establish an un-compromised morning boundary by executing a fixed wake time and placing your phone/digital distractions in another room until my quiet time and exercise are complete. Treat this window as a high-priority meeting on my calendar that protects my spiritual margin before task-driven demands take over.
