Where to Find My Life’s Mission

Where to Find My Life’s Mission

In Joshua 1:8 I read, Always remember what is written in the Book of the Teachings. Study it day and night to be sure to obey everything that is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything." (NCV)

Everyone wants something to live for, but many of us look for it in the wrong places.

I won’t find my mission in a magazine, on social media, or by watching TV with friends. I can’t just guess what it is either.

I can only find God’s mission for my life in one place: God’s Word.

Studies show that each of us has 600 to 700 talents, but we never use most of them. When I embrace God’s mission for my life, though, I’ll find that he can use all the gifts and talents he’s given me.

Jonah, one of God’s prophets in the Bible, received his life mission from God. The Bible says, “The LORD spoke his word to Jonah son of Amittai: ‘Get up, go to the great city of Nineveh, and preach against it, because I see the evil things they do’” (Jonah 1:1-2 NCV).

God gave Jonah his mission. He’ll give me one too as I read his Word. The more I dig into the Bible, the more I’ll understand my mission for life.

God uses many different ways to get his Word into my life. Sometimes I sit down to read it. Other times, I may hear someone preach it. And on other days I’ll read a devotional like this one.

If the only time I open my Bible is when I’m in church, I will never discover God’s mission for my life.

Instead, make the Bible a regular part of my life. Spend time with God every day, even if it’s just da few minutes. Put it in my schedule, write it on my calendar, or set a daily alert on my phone.

Joshua 1:8 says, “Always remember what is written in the Book of the Teachings. Study it day and night to be sure to obey everything that is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything” (NCV).

If I want to be successful in God’s mission for my life, stop looking for a vision and start looking for a verse.

God won’t write my mission in the sky. He has already written it in his Word.

In summary, remember what is written in God’s Word. Study it and be sure to obey everything that is written there. If I do so, I’ll be wise and successful in everything. Everyone wants something to live for, but many of us look for it in the wrong places. I won’t find my mission in a magazine, on social media, or by watching TV. I can’t just guess what it is either. I can only find God’s mission for my life in His Word. He’ll give me my mission as I get into His Word. The more I dig into the Bible, the more I’ll understand my mission for life. To get His Word into my life, I can read it, hear someone preach it or read a devotional. Whichever way I choose, I need to make the Bible a regular part of my life and spend time with God every day. If I want to be successful in God’s mission for my life, I should stop looking for a vision and start looking for a verse. God won’t write my mission in the sky. He has already written it in his Word.

Many think that prosperity and success come from having power, influential personal contacts, and a relentless desire to get ahead. But the strategy for gaining prosperity that God taught Joshua goes against this. He said that to succeed Joshua must (1) be strong and courageous because the task ahead would not be easy, (2) obey God's law, and (3) constantly read and study the Book of Instruction, God's Word. To be successful, I too should follow God's words to Joshua. I may not succeed by the world's standards, but I will be a success in God's eyes. For many, success is controlling others; for Joshua it meant being controlled by God. Act on what I know God has said, and God will assure me success in carrying out his purposes.
