Right Thinking Leads to Happiness

In Philippians 4:8 I read, Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things." (NKJV)

God’s recipe for happiness isn’t a one-shot formula. It’s something I need to follow every day: Worry about nothing, pray about everything, thank God for anything, and lastly, keep my mind on the right things.

If I want to be happy, don’t fill my mind with lies. Don’t fill it with garbage. Instead, fill it with things that inspire me and make me a better person. The Bible says, “I will not put anything wicked in front of my eyes (Psalm 101:3 GW). That doesn’t mean that God doesn’t want me to have fun. He says it's for my own good, because he knows what will truly make me happy.

What do I think about the most in my spare time? The quality of my life is determined by the quality of my thoughts.

One practical way to keep my mind on the right things is to not be critical, and to avoid putting people down. Instead, think good things about others. If I can’t think of good things, just don’t think about them.

The Bible says, “Whatever things are of good report . . . meditate on these things” (Philippians 4:8 NKJV).

God’s formula for happiness is this: Worry about nothing, pray about everything, thank God for anything, and keep my mind on the right things. If I follow it, the Bible promises, “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7 NKJV).

Who’s the main ingredient of this formula? It’s Jesus Christ. Without him, the happiness formula will just flop. True happiness is the result of having a right relationship with Jesus.

In summary, whatever things are true, noble, just, pure, are lovely, are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things. What I put into my mind determines what comes out in my words and actions. Paul tells me to program my mind with thoughts that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and worthy of praise. If I find myself having problems with wrong thoughts, examine what I'm feeding my mind with via TV, the Internet, reading, conversations, movies, video games, etc.  Replace any harmful input with wholesome material. Above all, read God's Word and pray. Ask God to help me focus my mind on what is good and pure.

Father, thank you for Your Word and Jesus as my savior and example. You want me and I need you in my life. Please give me Your strength for today and remind me in little ways that I can always believe in, have faith in and can trust you in everything. This includes being the authority for my life, the source of my self-worth and my hope for the future. You have my best interests in mind. So I ask you to help me to embrace the way you’ve made me; my gifting and passions. Help me to serve and fulfill the mission you have in mind for me.

Today, I ask you for wisdom and guidance for my day, my work, my leadership, my interactions with others, doing well and making a difference in others lives. I pray all these things through your Son Jesus’ name, Amen.
