Not Being Wise In My Own Eyes: Loving, Trusting, and Obedience to God’s Details

In review of Proverbs 3:5 it says to  Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own.” (The Message)

When an important decision arises, it's often difficult to trust anyone, and sometimes even God. But God knows what is best for me. He is a better judge of what I need than even I am. I must trust him completely in every choice I make. This doesn't mean that I should omit careful thinking or belittle my God-given ability to reason; but I should not trust my own ideas to the exclusion of all others. I must not be wise in my own eyes. I need to be willing to listen to and be corrected by God's Word and wise counselors. So I need to bring my decisions to God in prayer; use his Word as a guide; and then follow His leading. He will direct my path by guiding and protecting me.

God cares about every little detail of life. Look closely at nature. Each flower is filled with so many intricate details. And consider the human body. God says that he even numbers every hair on my head. He cares about the details.

Because he is a God of detail, he not only wants me to obey him, he’s also interested in the details of how I obey. God wants me to obey him in the right way and for the right reasons.

There’s an example of this in the Bible. A man named Naaman was ill with leprosy. He went to the prophet Elisha and asked what he should do.

This is the message Elisha sent: “Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed” (2 Kings 5:10 NIV).

Naaman was insulted. He had expected a dramatic healing from the prophet—not bizarre, humiliating instructions. But his servants talked him into following God’s detailed instructions, even though he didn’t understand them.

The result? “So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy” (2 Kings 5:14 NIV).

There wasn’t any special power in the water. Naaman was healed because of his obedience. He had faith. He obeyed God completely.

When I obey God completely, I’m showing that I love and trust him. When I love someone, I often do something the way they want it done just because I love that person. And when I trust someone, I do something how they want it done because I trust they know best. So when I love and trust God, I do things the way he wants them done. I obey him completely.

Faith is trusting God in the details of life. Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own” (The Message).

In summary, I need to trust God from the bottom of my heart; and not try to figure out on my own or rely only on what I know. I beginning to realize that It's often difficult for me to trust anyone, and sometimes even God. But God knows what is best for me. He is a better judge of what I need than even I am. I must trust him completely with every choice I make. But I should not trust my own ideas to the exclusion of all others or “be wise in my own eyes.” He will direct my path by guiding and protecting me if I follow and obey. So he not only wants me to obey him, he’s also interested in the details of how I obey. God wants me to obey him in the right way and for the right reasons. When I obey God completely, I’m showing that I love and trust him. I do things the way he wants them done. Faith is trusting God in the details of life.

In my time with God this morning, it comes to mind that I’m not trusting those who lead me. I have a hard time taking advice and criticism. I need to remember that God will work through those who lead me, whether I like it or not. I realize that I don’t like having to explain my decisions and report what I’m doing above me. Well, it’s time for me to get beyond this and open myself up and allow myself to be led. Obedience and how I obey are the things God's interested in.

Today Father, I admit this problem and ask you to forgive me. Through your Holy Spirit in my life, I ask that you help remind me of this so that I can surrender and become obedient to you and those who you have leading me. I ask you today for your wisdom and guidance for my day, my work, my leadership and my interactions with others. I ask these things through your Son Jesus name, Amen.
