In 2 Peter 3:11 I read, “Since everything around us is going to melt away, what holy, godly lives we should be living!" (TLB)
My commitments shape my life more than anything else. My commitments can develop me, or they can destroy me. But either way, they will define me.
What I’m committed to today, is what my life will look like in 20 years. I’ll become whatever I’m committed to.
It’s around the idea of commitment where most people miss God’s purpose for their lives. Many people are afraid to commit to anything, so they just drift through life. Others make half-hearted commitments to competing values, which leads to frustration and mediocrity. Others make a full commitment to worldly goals, such as becoming wealthy or famous, and they end up disappointed and bitter.
Every choice has eternal consequences, so I need to choose wisely: “Since everything around us is going to melt away, what holy, godly lives we should be living!” (2 Peter 3:11 TLB).
The first wise decision I should make is to continue to follow Jesus. I don’t have to understand all the implications of that decision as I make it. I simply need to respond to his invitation and make a commitment to follow him.
Then, as I follow Jesus, commit to the things that build a holy, godly life. Christlikeness will come from making Christlike commitments.
In summary, everything around me is not going to last, it will all melt away. Therefore, I should be living a holy and godly life. Father, thank you for Your Word and Jesus as my savior and example. You want me and I need you in my life. Please give me Your strength for today and remind me in little ways that I can always believe in, have faith in and can trust you in everything. This includes being the authority for my life, the source of my self-worth and my hope for the future. You have my best interests in mind. So I ask you to help me to embrace the way you’ve made me; my gifting and passions. Help me to serve and fulfill the mission you have in mind for me.
Father, in realizing that the earth is going to be burned up, I want to put my confidence in what is lasting and eternal and not be bound to earth and its treasures or pursuits. I shouldn’t spend my time piling up possessions. Help me to strive to develop Christlike character.
Today, I ask you for wisdom and guidance for my day, my work, my leadership, my interactions with others, doing well and making a difference in my new job. I pray all these things through you Son Jesus’ name, Amen.
