How to Trust God’s Goodness When Life Gets Tough

“For the LORD is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation.” Psalm 100:5 (NLT)

When I grew up in a Catholic home, learned this prayer: “God is great. God is good. Let us thank him for our food. Amen.” While simplistic, that prayer covers one key characteristic of God: his goodness.

Is it really true that God is good all the time? Absolutely! But many people don’t live like they believe it. It can be hard to believe in God’s goodness for many reasons, especially when pain and conflict come. Those are the times I tend to forget about God’s goodness. When I'm depressed, I think his goodness is for everyone except me. And when I'm worried or stressed out, I can’t seem to find—much less think about—God’s goodness, even when it’s right in front of me.

So how can I trust in God’s goodness when I don’t feel it? The Bible reminds me of his goodness over and over. Psalm 100:5 says, “For the LORD is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation” (NLT).

Focusing on God’s goodness is so important to life. It gives me a new perspective on my darkest days. But when I forget God’s goodness, I lose perspective and can only see the difficulty I'm facing.

God wants to give me a life of confidence by assuring me of his love and care. He wants to give me a life of influence and opportunities so that I can make a difference in the world. And he wants to give me an inheritance and a home in heaven with him forever. Who doesn’t want that? Who doesn’t need that?

So how can I experience God’s goodness? Sure, you can learn about God’s goodness when I read the Bible or hear a message about it. But I actually experience God’s goodness when I worship him. Nothing helps me focus like worship!

The Message paraphrase says, "Worship GOD if you want the best; worship opens doors to all his goodness" (Psalm 34:9). The way to experience God's goodness is through worship—when I praise God and thank him for who he is and what he has promised me.

Believing and understanding the goodness of God can revolutionize my life and give me a new perspective on my circumstances. It is the power to transform my life!

How does remembering God’s goodness to me in the past help me in my present pain? For me I can see by experiencing what I received.

Why does believing in God’s goodness give me confidence as you walk through life? For meIt's a reminder that he will always be there for me with His goodness and grace.

In Summary:
This reflection explores the foundational truth of God’s goodness—as highlighted in Psalm 100:5 and Psalm 34:9—especially during seasons of pain, depression, and stress, when that reality feels distant. While intellect acknowledges God’s nature, true experiential connection happens through intentional worship and thanksgiving, which shift focus away from temporary suffering toward His enduring character. Anchoring present hardship in the proven track record of God’s past faithfulness builds an unshakeable confidence, allowing me to view current friction not as evidence of His absence, but as an opportunity to experience His sustaining grace and align with His eternal purposes.

Bottom Line:
Active worship anchors my mind in God's past faithfulness, unlocking the confidence to see His goodness even through present pain.

Next Step:
Create a "Faithfulness Ledger" digital or physical journal entry today where you write down three specific past moments where God’s goodness sustained me through difficulty. Whenever present stress or friction threatens my perspective this week, review these entries for two minutes before engaging in a brief moment of silent worship, deliberately reinforcing my identity as a confident steward grounded in God’s proven character.
